Chapter Eleven

She was sure she could read!

Those were the thoughts Cassie had in her head when she opened up the email from Frances. Really how hard could it be to scramble some eggs, toast some bread, and make some bacon? She planned gardens that were the size of football fields! She managed weddings of minor royalty, from the corsages on the ushers to the matching flowers in the lapels of the grooms. Besides, she was feeling emboldened after last night’s success. She would show Ethan that she was a good student and not a hopeless cause.

She could make breakfast! Cassie looked at the kitchen, all pristine and waiting for her. She took her first steps into the kitchen unaccompanied and let out a sigh of relief. She pulled out her phone and looked at Frances’s instructions. Oh, how she wished she had the bear beside her. “The bear” is what she affectionately called Frances. Now more than ever, she wanted her bear sitting on the side, making sure she was doing it right.

“I can do this. Women through the ages did this without electricity! HA! I have this. Cassie looked at the instructions:

First, take the bacon out of the refrigerator. Also, be careful; this is country bacon. You will need to get the baby skillet and put it on the stove with some water. You will have to put the bacon in the water to boil the salt out of it.

“Boil the salt out of it?” Cassie had a bad feeling, but she wouldn’t go back. She looked in the cabinet and found a baby skillet. She filled it with water and then dropped the bacon in it. “Okay, there are no instructions on how high the flame should be. I’m in the kitchen, so I’ll put it as high as I had the noodles last night.”

“Alright, Cassie you are rocking! Now we get the toast. Let’s see what the instructions say.”

There is no toaster, so you will put the toast in the broiler. Make sure to put it on a nonstick tray or the grey one.”

Cassie looked around and found the nonstick tray and then placed four slices of bread. She wanted to save some time, so she slathered them with butter so she wouldn’t have to do it after they came out of the broiler. She placed the tray in the broiler and went back to her instructions.

“Cooking is like a dance. You have put the bacon on. Look at it. Is it boiling?” Cassie looked at the bacon; the water wasn’t boiling yet, so she turned it up a bit.

“The second step is to make sure you turn on the broiler. Then you want to get the eggs and crack them in a bowl. The goal is to have no shells in it.”

Cassie pulled down a bowl and then tried to crack an egg. The shell fell in.

“What is going on? It’s so slimy! This is exactly why I like my eggs well done. Well, I can’t cook this.
